Saint Lucy. What's this then?

The Martyrs. Noble, selfless, prepared to die (preferably in a horrible way) for their beliefs.

Some of the saints I'll be adding here met with bizarre deaths. There are the usual burnings, beheadings and so forth but some are so twisted I found myself laughing out loud at the sheer ..perverse horror of it all.

I began thinking of this project some time ago when I first heard about Saint Agatha, 'Patron of the Bells'. She is traditionally depicted holding a tray on which rest two bells. Well, It turns out that the bells are actually her breasts that her interrogators have cut off. Nice eh?

So here, the first in the series is my first martryed saint, St. Lucy (Lucia). She is also a tray carrier but what's that she's serving up? Why it's her own eyes! Because a man complimented her on their beauty, she plucked them out and told him he could have them, for she was betrothed to the lord. That's pretty convincing.

Hello, I like your blog. The pictures are brilliant. I think Brigid also pulled this removing-eyes-stunt to put a fella off but popped them back in later on. So they told us in school anyway.

Thanks very much Katherine. A lot of these life stories, myths and legends cross over. Some of the stories we were taught about Brigid were originally about the Irish Earth Goddesses Danu or Eriú. I came across another Irish Saint- who might make an appearance here- who was said to have had his head chopped off but who calmly replaced it and walked off-- just like the Green Knight in English folklore. Thanks for looking

She is the patron saint for many people and is respected by many. Donot insult their faith. Have some respect when you speak of them.

The purpose of this blog is to highlight some of the more bizarre interpretations, legends and myths associated with Saints and Martyrs, not to offend religious people. I find some of the stories so grotesque that there is a morbid dark humour in them. You disagree, as is your prerogative. Thank you for your comment.
